Position of Director, Institute of International Monetary Research
The Institute of International Monetary Research was founded by Professor Tim Congdon CBE in 2014. It is located at the University of Buckingham, where its staff participate in teaching and research. Its conferences and events are often held on university premises.
The Institute has established an outstanding reputation for the excellence of its analysis and commentary on the global macroeconomic scene. Notably, its staff warned in spring 2020 about the explosion in money growth then taking place in leading economies. They were almost unique among economic forecasting bodies in predicting – correctly – that the money explosion would result in a post-Covid boom and a big increase in inflation.
Dr. Juan Castañeda has been Director of the Institute since 2016. He has recently been offered a new position at the university, as Director of the Vinson Centre, and he has decided to accept the fresh challenge.
The Institute of International Monetary Research is therefore seeking to appoint a new Director. The job is exceptionally interesting. It combines analysis and research in the most exciting and controversial areas of contemporary macroeconomics; it also involves administrative oversight of the Institute’s work, plus teaching at the University of Buckingham.
The Director is expected to participate in public discussion and debate, and to promote the Institute in the media.
Applicants for the position should have strong academic credentials, ideally with a post-graduate degree in economics or a closely-related discipline, and a good grasp of econometric methods. They should have demonstrated in their career so far an ability to mix easily with other people, and to organize and lead events. Professor Congdon is keen that the Institute host original research on the monetary histories of the leading nations.
Salary is for negotiation, but will be roughly in line with that of a professor in an English university. Exceptional performance will be rewarded. The Institute is located in Buckingham and the successful applicant will be expected to spend most of his or her time in Buckingham.
