IIMR Annual Public lecture
Money and Inflation in the 2020s: explaining the recent success of the quantity theory of money

Speaker: Professor Tim Congdon. Tim Congdon is one of the world's leading monetary analysts. He advised the UK's 1979-97 Conservative government on economic policy, serving as a member of the Treasury Panel (the so-called 'Wise Men' ) from 1992 to 1997. In 2005 he published a long pamphlet on Money and Asset Prices in Boom and Bust and in 2009 a critique of the Bank of England's conduct in the Northern Rock affair called Central Banking in a Free Society. In 2007 a collection of essays on Keynes, the Keynesians and Monetarism appeared in the UK and in 2011 another collection with the title Money in a Free Society was published by Encounter Books in New York.

Speaker: Kent Matthews. Kent is the Sir Julian Hodge Professor of Banking and Finance at Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University, and Professor in Banking at Nottingham University Business School, University of Nottingham Ningbo China. He took the PhD in economics at University of Liverpool under Patrick Minford, and MSc (Econ) at Birkbeck University of London, and BSc (Econ) at the London School of Economics. He has held academic positions at Liverpool John Moore’s University, and University of Liverpool, and visiting academic positions at Fudan University (China), University of Western Ontario (Canada), Clemson University (USA), Humbolt University (Germany), and Leuven University (Belgium). He has also held visiting professional positions at the Bank of England (under Charles Goodhart), Lombard Street Research Ltd (under Tim Congdon), and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.
