The Money, Inflation and Monetarism course is created in collaboration with the University of Buckingham and designed for undergraduate students and professionals who wish to explore theories of inflation and macroeconomic stability from a monetarist perspective. You will be introduced to monetary theory, while exploring the roles of banking in a modern economy. Using video material featuring leading monetary economist Professor Tim Congdon from the Institute of International Monetary Research, this course is unique in its focus.
The course teaches the origin and evolution of modern monetary institutions and the work of the central bank in an economy. This will provide the theoretical basis that will allow you to understand the importance of central banks’ decisions in the explanation of inflation and nominal income. Using the Global Financial Crisis and Covid-19 as case studies, you will analyse the impact of changes in money growth on aggregate demand and asset prices. This perspective allowed Professor Congdon to anticipate the inflationary period during Covid-19 and will give you the tools to anticipate changes in inflation and interest rates.
A 9-week non-credit bearing option is available for students who are only interested in accessing Tim Congdon’s lecture series and do not want to complete the final assessment.
